Making your Kitchen Garden child-friendly is important – so you can know they can play and work safely.

Here are some areas to look out for:

Stakes and trellises – remember that the kids are smaller than you, trim off or cover with foam any bits of bamboo, wood, or wire that you are using to support your plants.  These can cause a nasty poke in the eye or

Chemicals and Fertilisers – obviously, store in a locked (but ventilated) area, or ona  very high shelf with no climbing access or opportunities.

Ponds – cover with mesh, or just fill them in until the kids are older

Tools – in particular secateurs should be kept out of reach

Insects – encourage your kids to handle and inspect bugs, but teach them which ones are dangerous.  Here in Australia, some spiders are poisonous, we the kids learn not to touch.
